Family-friendly personal training means fitting real coaching around kids, work, and a partner: early-morning slots before the house wakes, couples sessions that halve the cost, and pre or postnatal training done with medical clearance. Mr PT Fitness is a private home studio in Dee Why run by Matt Reilly, a personal trainer with 10+ years' experience, where most parents train at 5:30 to 6:30am so childcare is never the blocker.
How do you fit personal training around kids and work?
The two things that make training stick for parents are a slot early enough that nobody else needs you yet, and a format that fits the household budget and schedule. That usually means a pre-dawn weekday session or a couples slot you share with your partner. The whole studio model is built for people with full lives: fixed times, one coach, no queueing, and a 10-minute drive from most of the Northern Beaches. The goal is a session that survives a bad night's sleep and a school run, not a perfect week that never happens.
Why do early-morning slots dominate parent bookings?
Early-morning slots dominate because they finish before kids wake, before work starts, and before the day can steal the plan. The pattern across parent clients:
- 5:30am: home and showered before the kids are up, session already banked
- 6:00am: the most requested slot, done by 7:00 for school drop-off or the commute
- 6:30am: last pre-school-run slot, works if someone else does breakfast
Evening slots look convenient and then get eaten by dinner, bath, and bedtime. For the full commuter timing breakdown, see the best time to train if you commute.
Can my partner and I train together?
Yes. Couples and pair sessions run as small group from $25 per person, with each of you following your own programme. It's one of the most popular family setups because it solves three problems at once:
- Cost: two people share the slot, so the per-person price drops to $25
- Childcare: you tag-team one early slot instead of booking two separate times
- Accountability: you're far less likely to skip when your partner is going too
A beginner and an experienced lifter can train side by side because the programming is individual, not a shared class. Different goals, same slot.

Can I train during pregnancy or after having a baby?
Yes, with medical clearance. Pre and postnatal training is safe and beneficial for most people once a GP or obstetrician has signed off, and the programme is modified around each stage. How it works at the studio:
- Pregnancy: training continues with clearance, adjusting load, position and intensity as pregnancy progresses. The aim is maintaining strength and comfort, not chasing PRs.
- Postnatal: most clients return around the 6-week check after an uncomplicated birth, starting with gentle core and pelvic-floor work before any real loading.
- Referrals: for pelvic-floor issues or abdominal separation, Mr PT Fitness works alongside a women's health physiotherapist rather than replacing one.
This is general training within the scope of a personal trainer, not medical advice. Anything clinical is referred to your GP, obstetrician, or physio.
Can I bring my kids to the studio?
By arrangement, yes, but the studio is a private home gym, not a supervised creche. A young child who can sit or play safely nearby is usually fine for a session if you clear it beforehand. Loaded barbells and moving equipment mean kids can't roam, so it suits a baby in a pram or an older child who'll settle with a device more than a busy toddler. In practice, most parents find an early slot easier than bringing kids along at all.
What happens during school holidays?
School-holiday weeks flip the routine, so training moves to flexible daytime slots instead of the usual early mornings. When the kids are home and the 6am handover disappears, mid-morning and lunchtime sessions open up and are easy to book. Some parents switch to a couples slot for the holidays, or add a Saturday morning session. The point is to keep the habit alive through the disruption rather than pausing for two weeks and losing momentum. If someone in the house is just starting out, the 12-week beginner programme is built to absorb a missed week without losing progress.
Frequently asked questions
Can my partner and I train together?
Yes. Couples and pair sessions run as small group from $25 per person (max 4). You each follow your own programme with individual feedback, so a beginner and an experienced lifter can train side by side. Pair sessions suit couples, friends, or a parent and adult child training together at the Dee Why studio.
Is the studio kid-safe?
The studio is a private home gym, so it isn't a supervised creche. Parents are welcome to bring a young child who can sit or play safely nearby during a session, by arrangement, but weights and equipment mean kids can't roam freely. Most parents book early-morning slots so childcare isn't needed at all.
What about postnatal training?
Yes, once you have clearance from your GP or obstetrician, usually around the 6-week check for an uncomplicated birth. Postnatal training starts gently, rebuilding core and pelvic-floor control before any loading. For pelvic-floor or abdominal-separation concerns, Mr PT Fitness works alongside a women's health physiotherapist rather than replacing one.
